Adding my advice to be the person in the group to ask strangers to take your group photo. Everyone else will be grateful someone else was proactive in talking to a stranger.

When you spot a family or group of friends taking a photo, offer to take the photo so everyone can be in it. Not just that, though. Be joyful about it! Announce, "I'm going to take a few!" Do a few angles and in both landscape and portrait modes. Do a close up and a further away shot. Okay, now a silly one! Be quick about it, but take at least 5 shots. Your photo is going to be their holiday card!
